Mel Howse
– Glass artist Mel Howse is taking her experience of working with vitreous enamels on glass into working with steel at AJ Wells & Sons. Amongst her recent commissioned public art is a 500m2 glass façade for Sainsbury's in Milton Keynes, and a new double facade for a church in Sussex. A Queen Elizabeth Scholarship award gave Mel's enamelling work an exciting boost in 2008, providing the opportunity to diversify and explore new arenas.
At A J Wells, she has been exploiting industrial techniques to take the use of enamels in innovative and unconventional directions. 'The interaction of inquisitive artist with with a factory full of smart equipment is leading to a good deal of spontaneous work', Mel explains.
Mel's interest lies in the exploration of surface construction and the development of design through its practical application. Using bespoke enamels produced at the factory and having the space to experiment, she has been creating new and unique pieces of art. Her latest pieces are two 2.2m tall cylindrical steel columns called 'The Equivalents'. New adventures are underway are now moving into commissioned works.
