New Investment: Automated Storage and Laser Cutting System

A.J Wells and Sons are an established British business based on the Isle of Wight, with the largest enamel facility in the UK. We are the main supplier of TFL’s London Underground signage and cladding and a principal supplier for the Paris Metro.

We also manufacture a wide range of premium products including our market leading Charnwood Stoves and Vlaze surfaces. With more emphasis being placed on the home environment in the last couple of years, we have seen a huge increase in demand for these aspects of the business. We are pleased to announce that due to this surge in demand we are well positioned to make a significant investment in our infrastructure with the installation of a state-of-the-art automated storage and laser cutting system.

Automated storage and laser cutting system

The system provides highly accurate and efficient laser cutting with tolerances of just 0.2mm and the capability of cutting material from 0.5mm-25mm in thickness. This expands our ability to prototype and manufacture designs with even greater complexity.

With a storage capacity of up to 87 tonnes of both processed and unprocessed sheet material, it will increase our cutting capacity by over 100%. Automation of such a high volume will allow for 24/7 cutting and enable rapid part turnaround.

The system comes with the very latest energy efficient fibre technology and will reduce demands on our electricity supply. The ability to continue cutting out of hours will allow us to utilise our solar panel installation at weekends. These energy savings/environmental benefits were a key consideration and one that adds to the company’s existing green credentials. Living up to our pledge of putting environmental considerations at the forefront of all our decision making and contributing to our commitment to Net Zero 2050.

Bespoke projects

It’s a fantastic piece of kit which increases our capabilities even further and broadens the scope of clients we can work with. We have always been keen to take on bespoke and sometimes unusual projects, working with a range of businesses, artists and organisations with unique requirements.

This investment allows us to take on more of these wonderful projects with quick turn arounds for prototypes now even more achievable.

We see a strong future in British manufacturing post pandemic / Brexit and we look forward to amplifying our output both here in the UK and across the globe. If you have a project to discuss, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team.
