Prototyping

A.J Wells benefits from an experienced in-house design team that has worked on a wide range of unique and challenging projects spanning 50 years of business. This wealth of experience coupled with state-of-the-art laser profiling and a high precision metal workshop gives us the capacity to prototype products quickly.

Latest developments: Automated storage and laser cutting system

In 2021 we made a significant investment in our infrastructure with the installation of a state-of-the-art automated storage and laser cutting system.

The system provides highly accurate and efficient laser cutting with tolerances of just 0.2mm and the capability of cutting material from 0.5mm-25mm in thickness. This expands our ability to prototype and manufacture designs with even greater complexity.

With a storage capacity of up to 87 tonnes of both processed and unprocessed sheet material, it will increase our cutting capacity by over 100%. Automation of such a high volume will allow for 24/7 cutting and enable rapid part turnaround.

The system comes with the very latest energy-efficient fibre technology and will reduce demands on our electricity supply. Automation will enable us to continue cutting out of hours and at weekends, significantly increasing our output.

This investment added to an already extensive array of facilities under one roof enables us to successfully take on more wonderful projects while offering even faster and more efficient turnarounds.

Unique Prototyping Projects

The launch of the SONY PlayStation PS5 at Oxford Station

We were commissioned by Transport for London to create four giant illuminated Underground signs in the shape of the PlayStation console buttons to mark the release of the PS5. The Triangle, Circle, X and Square pole-mounted signs were designed to temporarily replace the standard Roundels that mark the four street exits at London’s Oxford Circus Station.

The signs were designed, manufactured, and installed by us with the project being carried out under strict secrecy and turned around in just over 2 weeks!

Frank Pick Memorial

A.J Wells was commissioned by Art on the Underground to complete the manufacture and installation of a unique memorial to Frank Pick, the London Underground design visionary who shaped the look of the iconic London Underground.

A.J Wells worked with the concept and design by artists Langlands & Bell to manufacture cast bronze lettering in the New Johnston font and a backlit roundel bearing his name.

Soho House / White City House

A.J Wells designed and manufactured bespoke enameled wall hung vanity units for the bathrooms of Soho House’s White City House. Luxurious vitreous enamel, framed in nickel-plated brass.

MALIN+GOETZ

A J WELLS are thrilled to have designed developed, manufactured and supplied high-quality retail furniture and fixtures for the MALIN+GOETZ apothecary shop, Seven Dials, London.

The combination of exceptional modern design, high-quality manufacturing and superb materials resulted in the creation of beautiful, and aesthetically sophisticated furniture that successfully engages with the customers’ visual and tactile senses without suffering from wear and tear due to frequent interaction.

Chelsea Flower Show

In 2004 A.J Wells was approached by Diarmuid Gavin Designs to help create an epic garden at the Chelsea Flower Show. The garden featured over 5,000 individually coloured enameled balls to create a habitable pod within the garden.

Due to the spherical nature of the balls, bespoke spraying and firing jigs were built to enable each ball to be seamlessly enameled.
A range of specialist contrasting colours was developed in-house in conjunction with Diarmuid Gavin and renowned fashion designer Orla Kiely.

Once finished the balls were painstakingly attached to a fabricated steel framework that formed the Pod. The finished Pod featuring a voice-activated opening was placed in a garden of ferns and Japanese aralia.

Diarmuid Gavin Designs achieved a Silver Gilt award for their garden.

Basildon Sign

A J WELLS was tasked with the manufacture of eight enormous, 1600mm high, vitreous enamel letters that formed the front face of this incredible sign installation. The letters were quite an engineering achievement due to their large scale. Each letter was initially laser cut from two full-size sheets of steel that were then seamlessly, edge to edge, hand-welded to form one incredibly large sign face. Eat your heart out Hollywood!

KEY FEATURE:
• Use of invisible weld technique

Crossrail

A.J Wells has designed, developed, manufactured and installed thousands of signs ranging from door plates and totems, to illuminated fascias and roundels for many of the new Crossrail, Elizabeth Line stations.

For the Bakerloo Line Link Project, A.J Wells supplied vitreous enamel printed white cladding panels in flat, convex and concave profiles. They were printed with individual patterns in one of two subtle grey colours to the client’s specifications.

A.J Wells matched glass specification requirements made by the project design team.
