Northern Line Extension Project – Battersea Power Station & Nine Elms Railway Signage

London saw the first major tube expansion this century open to the public on Monday 20th September 2021. A.J Wells & Sons Ltd are proud to have surveyed, designed, manufactured, and installed the signage throughout the 1 billion pound Transport for London Northern Line Extension (NLE) project.

The NLE extension will serve two new stations; Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station. The whole area is undergoing a massive redevelopment, with homes being built and many jobs created.

The London Mayor, Sadiq Khan said “the project will play a major role in the capital’s recovery… it’s just the shot in the arm that London needs.”

The BBC interviewed several local residents who appeared delighted with the development saying, “It’s great to finally be on the tube for the people in Battersea… it will be easier to get to work, easier to get across London – it’s just a historic day”. Another commented about the station itself, “The station is beautiful, the signs are wonderful”.

The nearly two miles of new tunnels now link into the existing line at Kennington and will serve the US embassy nearby, while providing access to the West End in just 12 mins. For now, there will be trains running every 10 mins with a view to increasing frequency next year. With Crossrail scheduled to be completed soon, meaning more changes to the Tube Map, it’s certainly an exciting time for London and all of us here at A.J Wells.

Fun Fact: TfL’s Battersea Power Station is the only tube line with Station in the name, so it’s actually Battersea Power Station Station.

If you are in the area, why not visit ‘Happy Street’, the fantastic installation by artist and designer Yinka Ilori, in nearby Thessaly Road. We manufactured and installed the stunning vitreous enamel panels and the project is one of our favourite collaborations to date – we highly recommend checking it out in person.
