Premier Inn
A.J Wells & Sons Limited were commissioned to manufacture and install a striking, large-scale vitreous enamel artwork titled ‘Motherhood.’ Created by renowned artist Mila Furstova, the piece pays homage to the former Queen Charlotte’s Maternity Hospital (1813–1939) that once stood on this site. Mila Furstova is known for blending traditional etching techniques with modern aesthetics, producing work that often speaks to deeply human themes and experiences.
For this prominent new Premier Inn building—visible to over one hundred thousand daily commuters along the A40 Westway—we employed our WellsClad vitreous enamel panels in a highly challenging installation. These panels are exceptionally durable, fire-resistant, and supported by a thirty-year design life warranty, offering artists extensive creative freedom and a distinctive, beautiful aesthetic. As the largest vitreous enamel decal project we have undertaken, it demonstrates the success and scalability of this process. Working closely with the architectural team, we designed, fabricated, and installed both the framing system and the individual enamel panels, ensuring the artwork’s integrity, vibrancy, and longevity.
The result is an artwork that not only enhances the building’s façade but also evokes a sense of cultural memory and connection to the area’s past. ‘Motherhood’ now stands as a lasting tribute, brought to life through the craftsmanship of A.J Wells and the visionary artistry of Mila Furstova.
