The Rowe Soffit

A.J Wells & Sons Limited designed, developed, manufactured and installed the beautiful vitreous enamel external soffit on the sixth floor of The Rowe, Whitechapel, London. This bold and colourful large-scale public artwork is the creation of acclaimed London-based artist Yinka Ilori.

The multi coloured panels of this prestigious artwork were installed as part of a six-story building extension designed by Architect Allford Hall Monaghan Morris for developers Frasers Property.

The building’s twelve floors are now split between the upper six which have been designed as a reflection of the original building below. These two areas, old and new, are separated by an external terrace that features the beautiful vitreous enamel external soffit, creating a striking visual for both those on the sixth floor and from street level below.

“This looks incredible and will really give the space its own identity.”

Colour matching studio

We always enjoy the challenge Yinka’s striking works present. Colour matching of vitreous enamel is carried out manually by our skilled operatives to achieve the best match between your Pantone or Ral reference and our vitreous enamel sample. Yinka’s artwork consisted of 19 carefully selected Pantone colours with our experienced team utilising the latest equipment to carry out a series of tests to ensure each one matches as exactly as possible.

It is great to see vitreous enamel being used for increasingly ambitious projects. Its non-fading colours, graffiti resistance and zero smoke/fire safe properties, mean it is the ideal choice for so many urban projects. Whether underground, at street level or six-storeys or more above!
