Bunhill 2 Energy Centre – Wellsclad Vitreous Enamel Cladding Panels

A.J Wells and Sons are pleased to have manufactured and supplied our Wellsclad vitreous enamel cladding panels for the TfL / Islington Council, New Bunhill 2 Energy Centre. The heat recovery centre takes excess heat from the London Underground, Northern Line and feeds it into the Islington Council’s district heating network to provide offices, leisure centres and over 1,350 homes with heat and hot water.

On the right-hand side of the building is where the former lift shafts were and where the heat exchanger is located. This collects the waste heat from the vent shaft as it rises from the underground network. On the left-hand side of the building is where the power section is located, which takes that waste heat and through compressors and heat pumps turns it into useful higher-temperature energy.

As a British-based company that is passionate about the environment and sustainability, we were delighted to be involved in such a green project. Vitreous enamel’s unrivalled heat resistance and longevity meant it was the perfect material for the job!

Vitreous Enamel Eco Benefits

Eco benefits:
• Exceptional longevity (lasting up to 4x longer than powder-coated paneling)
• Minimal maintenance requirements (reducing energy expenditure)
• Non-toxic material
• Fully recyclable

A company-wide approach

The idea of being ‘green’ extends beyond the products we manufacture and to every aspect of the company; from choosing raw materials, recycling packaging and even how we transport our materials and products. It is our view that it is environmentally unsustainable to transport heavy materials around the world, on the grounds of small savings, when the world’s finest materials are available here in the UK. With this in mind, A.J Wells strives to buy British whenever possible. We are ISO 14001 accredited, Fors Bronze (A fleet Operator recognition Scheme), and working towards ISO 45001.

The New Bunhill 2 Energy Centre project is aligned perfectly with our aims as a company and is the kind of collaboration we love to be part of.
