Falcon Road Bridge shortlisted for two major architecture awards
We are delighted to share that the transformation of Falcon Road Bridge in Clapham Junction has been shortlisted for two major architecture awards. The project has been shortlisted by both the NLA Awards and the AJ Architecture Awards in the Landscape and Public Realm Project category 2026.
The project transformed a previously dark and unwelcoming underpass into a brighter, safer and more engaging route through Clapham Junction. It was completed in December 2025, after being commissioned by Wandsworth Council in association with Network Rail and was developed following an architectural competition run with the London Festival of Architecture.
A community focused transformation
Falcon Road Bridge connects communities on either side of the railway and more than one thousand public responses helped inform the original competition process. The winning Beyond the Bridge proposal was led by GPAD alongside a wider team of designers and specialists. The artwork developed by Smiling Wolf celebrates local landmarks and stories, helping turn an everyday journey into something much more closely connected with the character of Wandsworth.
Our role at Falcon Road Bridge
Over five months, our team manufactured and installed more than 600 artwork panels, together with entrance fascias, benches and planters for the completed scheme. Working to GPAD’s concept, we developed the full enamel package, covering colour and artwork control, metalwork, fixings and installation.
The panels were manufactured using vitreous enamel at our Isle of Wight facility, where we manage the metalworking, spraying and firing processes under one roof. Vitreous enamel was particularly well suited to the demands of this project because its fired glass surface is colour fast, non porous, weather resistant and easy to clean. Its resistance to graffiti and everyday wear also makes it especially suitable for busy public environments where appearance and durability need to work together.
Maintaining consistent colour and finish across more than 600 individual panels required close control throughout production. Our installation team also worked closely with the wider project partners, including FM Conway, to complete the work safely and efficiently on this busy London route.
Recognition from the AJ and NLA Awards
The AJ Architecture Awards are now in their ninth year and celebrate outstanding completed architecture across the United Kingdom. Shortlisted projects are visited by expert judges, with the winners due to be announced at the awards ceremony in London on 26 November 2026.
The NLA Awards, supported by the Mayor of London, recognise the people, places and projects helping to shape a better London. Entries are assessed by industry experts before shortlisted projects are considered by an international jury, with the winners announced at Guildhall on 19 November 2026.
